What makes me think open air markets and I are not a marriage made in heaven? For the second time, I got it wrong today.
In July, Helen and I turned up and sat under brollies with the paint peeling off Pretty Pink Porcelain Piggy Bank and when we were thoroughly cold and miserable (about 10.30a.m.) we went home. I understand the sun came out shortly thereafter.
We booked again for the first of August. SURELY the 1st Aug in SW France would be sunny? And in the meantime, having learned a few lessons on failed attempt number one, a few adjustments were made. Firstly, of course, PPPPB got waterproofed. I sorted stuff, categorized stock, worked out out a coherent pricing strategy, translated most signage into French, too, (just in CASE any French people suddenly awoke to the joys of sending greetings cards) and even made progress on this webpage so I could quote it with confidence. Apropos of that, sadly, this morning I see we have now lost the stunning “Sliding Door” themed layout. I’m not having a good morning, am I? ERIC? HELP! Ah well, I’ll just think of it as a blog for now. But I digress.
I keep an eye on the weather forecast which deteriorates as the week progresses. By the time Helen and I liaise on Saturday evening it is supposed to rain from 10 a.m. tomorrow. I decide that the chances of managing to get all displayed stock safely under cover in the event of a short sharp downpour are slim. Most of our prospective customers would probably NOT be between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. so, with a heavy heart, I decide NOT to go. Helen is honorably “stood down”.
Everything I have assembled and packed up ready to load the car tonight to get a flying start in the morning is still standing by the door because – it is raining. I unpack everything again, re-set my showroom and sort out the atelier. Ho hum. Of course I can’t sleep. Was this a coward’s decision? Should I have perhaps gone with JUST waterproof stock? Erm, that’s 13 key fobs, a mouse mat and . . well, and nothing, actually. At 2 a.m. I look at the forecast again. Now the prospect is for rain from 9 a.m. until noon. Whew! That’s OK then. I switch off the 5.30 a.m. alarm.
At 8 a.m. when I wake the sun is shining. The Rain-viewer app tells me there is NO RAIN ANYWHERE! By 9 a.m. there is one small cloud hovering above the “u” in Bordeaux. We get a short, light shower here in Grand Brassac between 11.45 a.m. and 11 50 a.m. I post ANOTHER grovelling apology on the DVN.
Plan B? Is there a plan B? Any one fancy trying on line sales?
Will I try again in September?
RED CABBAGE (unless you are a VERY avid fan of the late Victoria Wood that will mean nothing to you. Sorry, I’m feeling a tad fragile, I DESERVE the self indulgence of an “in” joke.
